(From Freezing at
night to Roasting) Customer renting in 1
bedroom apartment in large building.
Winter
time: Using between 150 and 250
kWh of electricity per month. The bedroom was cold and an
electric heater was used to stay warm. At the time we
made the apartment more efficient the last bill was for 157
kWh. The next bill was 135 kWh, then 100 kWh then 170 kWh. We
asked why it went up. Answer: it was too warm. It
was 88 degrees (in February) in the bedroom, and the air
conditioner was being used a lot!!! We went back and
made some additional modifications - this time to reduce the
heat a little. We laugh that during the winter time the
customer NEEDS to use an AIR CONDITIONER BECAUSE WE MADE
IT SO WARM. We asked
"why not just open the window a bit?" Answer : for security
reasons.
Customer
renting 3 bedroom apartment in 2 Family
house. Winter
time: The complaints were that the
apartment was cold and that landlord did not give enough heat.
Some rooms cold. We made the apartment more
efficient so that the 2 coldest rooms
became the warmest rooms (while not cooking in the
kitchen). Summer
time: One air conditioner had a freezing
up problem we came up with a solution that partially helped.
Then we tried another improvement to the design that made
it more efficient. This virtually eliminated the
freezing up problem. Also saved them over ($20) twenty dollars
a month on their electric bill.
Customer in 1
family detached old house. Located close to the water.
Previously large family used 400 kWh to
900 kWh of electricity and unknown amount of
oil for heating. Estimates 1200 to 1400 gallons a year
for similar size homes. They complained the house was too
drafty and used too much oil to keep warm.
New family that moved
in was much smaller, did not use much hot water, liked it
colder and did not like air conditioning(had only one).
Note: these changes make direct comparisons not reflective of
average improvements but serve as an example of what is
possible.
We were called in and
made improvements to many areas. We were able to
make a few different modifications to the oil
burning furnace, both inside and outside. This resulted in
increased efficiency internally and
enabled the recovery some of the waste
heat externally. This is an unusual combination of
improvements. Our work enabled the basement
temperature to increase without using any extra energy! This
made the basement a few degrees warmer. This also
resulted in a higher and more stable upstairs living area
temperature. Upon testing (in moderately cold
weather) the temperature drop would be only 1 or
2 degrees per hour when the heating system was
off.
The electric
usage averaged 100 KWH to under 150 KWH and oil
usage was 500 to 750 gallons per year. The
customer was very cooperative so we did a large amount of
education. We taught about many areas in which improvements
could be made. Note: The large savings were also
possible because the customer was concerned with
keeping the oil and electric bills to a minimum.
Installed our Solar
Heating Curtains to help add heat to the house for
free.
Customer will be implementing
additional energy saving technology and
improvements.
Customer (products
only): Purchased some energy saving
products for about $20. Reported savings of $10 per month.
That is a 2 month payback period.
